Introduction
In 2012, 17 European countries issued this €2 coin to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the introduction of the euro. The European Union attaches particular importance to this commemorative coin, as it marks a decade of the single currency. In addition, it marks a significant period of economic stability and cooperation between member countries. Indeed, this coin recalls the benefits and impact of the euro on the eurozone since its creation in 2002.
Coin description
Helmut Andexlinger, a graphic designer at the Austrian Mint, created the complex and symbolic design for the obverse of the coin. In the centre, he depicted a globe with a euro symbol superimposed on it. This globe is surrounded by various images representing key sectors of the European economy. They include wind turbines and buildings, symbolising renewable energy and European architecture. In addition, symbols of industry and technology illustrate progress and innovation.
In addition, at the bottom of the globe, there are the dates “2002 – 2012”, which indicate the ten years of the euro. These dates, framed by decorative patterns, add a touch of elegance to the design. Around the central circle, twelve stars represent the twelve founding member countries of the eurozone. Thus, these stars underline the unity and solidarity of the members of the European Union.
In addition, the letters and inscriptions harmoniously frame the central symbol. The fine and detailed engraving offers a rich and attractive texture to the touch.
Anecdote
As for the Principality of Monaco and the Vatican microstate, they did not issue this coin because they are not members of the European Union. However, although the San Marino microstate is not part of the European Union, it still issued the coin, but this issue was not counted in the common issue. In Luxembourg, a law requires the presence of the portrait of the Grand Duke on coins issued in that country. Consequently, the portrait of the Grand Duke was struck as a watermark on the central part of the coin. In the Netherlands, a similar law exists but it is repealed during common issues.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the €2 coin issued in 2012 by 17 European countries for the 10th anniversary of the euro is a miniature work of art celebrating a decade of economic and monetary cooperation in Europe. It captures the essence of European unity through its symbols and detailed design. This commemorative coin illustrates not only the importance of the euro for the member countries, but also the values of progress, innovation and solidarity that characterise the European Union.
