Introduction

Around the portraits, one can read the inscription in capital letters “WILLEM-ALEXANDER KONING DER NEDERLANDEN”. In French, this translates to “WILLEM-ALEXANDER KING OF THE NETHERLANDS”. On the left, the inscription “200 JAAR KONINKRIJK” means “200 YEARS OF THE KINGDOM”. These inscriptions recall the importance of this anniversary for the nation.
Furthermore, the initials “MH” and the year “2013” are visible at the bottom of the design. These initials refer to the artist who designed the coin, while the year marks the bicentenary of the Dutch monarchy. In addition, the outer edge of the coin is decorated with the twelve stars of the European Union, symbolizing unity and harmony between the member states.
