2017 – Latvia – Latgale

Introduction

In 2017, Latvia issued a 2 euro commemorative coin dedicated to the Latgale region. This issue highlights an important region of the country, rich in history and culture. As such, the coin celebrates the coat of arms of Latgale, a significant symbol for Latvians. Furthermore, this coin strengthens the sense of national identity in Latvia.

Coin description

The obverse of the coin features a central motif representing the coat of arms of Latgale. This coat of arms consists of a majestic griffin, holding a sword in its right foreleg. In addition, the griffin, a mythological creature with the head of an eagle and the body of a lion, symbolizes vigilance and strength. The sword it brandishes is a symbol of courage and defense. Thus, the griffin and the sword represent the protection and bravery of the Latgale region.

Around the central image, the inscriptions “LATVIJA” at the top and “LATGALE” at the bottom can be read in capital letters. “LATVIJA” translates to “Latvia” in English, emphasizing the origin of the coin. In addition, “LATGALE” refers to the region honored. To the right of the central motif, the year of issue “2017” is inscribed, indicating the year this commemorative coin was put into circulation.

In addition, the coin is surrounded by twelve five-pointed stars, evenly distributed along the outer edge. These stars represent the twelve founding countries of the eurozone, symbolising European unity and solidarity. The outer edge of the coin is two-coloured, with a silver outer ring and a gold centre, characteristic of the 2 euro coins. As a result, the coin is immediately recognisable.

Conclusion

The 2 euro coin issued by Latvia in 2017 in honour of Latgale is an important tribute to this historical region. By highlighting the coat of arms of Latgale, Latvia celebrates the cultural and historical richness of this part of the country. Therefore, this coin, through its design and inscriptions, reflects the importance of the Latgale region for the Latvian national identity. Furthermore, it recalls Latvia’s integration into the European community. Finally, this coin is a symbol of national pride and international recognition.
