Introduction
In 2017, Portugal issued a two-euro commemorative coin that celebrates the 150th anniversary of Portugal’s Public Security (PSP). In addition, it highlights the rights, freedoms and guarantees granted to Portuguese citizens.
Coin description
The obverse of the coin features a complex artistic composition. Two stylized profiles of human faces are in the center, symbolizing the protection of citizens’ rights and freedoms. To the right of the faces, the words “DIREITOS”, “LIBERDADES”, and “GARANTIAS” appear in capital letters, emphasizing the importance of these fundamental principles.
At the top of the piece, the acronym “PSP” is written, accompanied by the Public Security emblem. At the bottom we read “INCM” and “JOSÉ DE GUIMARÃES”, respectively the monetary institution responsible for the production of the piece and the name of the artist. Additionally, three stylized heraldic shields adorn the lower part of the coin, reminiscent of the traditional Portuguese coat of arms.
Around the outer edge are the twelve stars of the European Union, symbolizing unity and cooperation between member states. Furthermore, the inscription “1867-2017 SEGURANÇA PÚBLICA” recalls the dates marking the anniversary of the founding of Public Security.
