Introduction
This 2 euro coin, issued by Slovakia in 2017, celebrates the 550th anniversary of the founding of Istropolitana University. Founded in 1467, this institution is the first university in Slovakia. Thus, the coin commemorates an important milestone in the history of Slovak education.
Coin description
The obverse of the coin features an academic scene in relief. In the center, three historical figures symbolize teaching and the transmission of knowledge. The figure on the right, seated and in academic robes, embodies a teacher in discussion with two students. Furthermore, the background shows the Istropolitana University building, representing its architectural and educational importance.
At the top left, a circular medallion represents King Matthias Corvinus, founder of the university. Next to the medallion, the year “1467” recalls the date of foundation. Therefore, these historical elements highlight the heritage of the institution.
The inscription “UNIVERZITA” appears on the left and “ISTROPOLITANA” on the right, framing the main scene. At the bottom, the name of the country “SLOVENSKO” is written, accompanied by the year of issue “2017”. Furthermore, to the left of the main scene, the initials “MP” indicate the engraver of the piece. Additionally, the twelve stars of the European Union form a circle around the edge, integrating the coin into the European context.
