Introduction
Monaco issued this two-euro commemorative coin in 2022 and celebrates the 100th anniversary of the death of Albert I, Prince of Monaco. Therefore, it honors the memory and achievements of this notable sovereign in Monegasque history.
Coin description
The obverse of this coin features a detailed portrait of Albert I. He wears a military uniform with a cap decorated with a princely insignia. This portrait occupies the center of the room, highlighting the stature and dignity of the prince. To the left of the portrait, we read the inscription “MONACO” engraved vertically. On the right, the year of issue, “2022”, appears.
In addition, under the portrait, the inscription “ALBERT I 1848 – 1922” pays tribute to the prince’s dates of birth and death. The crosses before and after the text symbolize the beginning and end of his life respectively. In addition, the outer border of the coin features the twelve stars of the European Union, representing Monaco’s integration into the European Monetary System.
