The history of the coin
The 2023 commemorative 2 euro coin honors the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Indeed, it pays tribute to Spain’s role in managing EU activities. Additionally, it highlights European values and Spain’s contribution to unity and cooperation within the EU.
This coin also celebrates Spain’s rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2023. In fact, the presidency of the Council of the EU changes every six months between the member states.
Thus, during its presidency, Spain was able to direct and coordinate the work of the Council of the EU. This allowed him to influence the legislative and political agenda of the Union.
Description of the coin
The center of the coin features a stylized design of the acronym “EU” followed by the number “23”. This marks the year 2023. Between the letters “U” and “E” and the number “23” there are two parallel horizontal bands. These bands evoke equality and cohesion within the European Union.
Around the central design, the arcuate text “ESPAÑA 2023 – PRESIDENCIA ESPAÑOLA DEL CONSEJO DE LA UNIÓN EUROPEA” is inscribed. This inscription reads “Spain 2023 – Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union” in Spanish. Below the number “23”, the symbol of the Royal Spanish Mint is visible. This symbol is a crowned letter “M”.
In addition, the outer border of the coin is decorated with twelve five-pointed stars. These stars represent the member states of the European Union. They surround the central motif and the inscriptions, forming a symbolic crown.
