Introduction
Croatia issued this 2 euro coin in 2024 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Marko Marulić. This poet and thinker is considered the “father of Croatian literature”. In addition, his works in Croatian and Latin are recognized for their historical and cultural significance. With this issue, Croatia celebrates Marulić’s influence on its literary heritage and that of South-Eastern Europe.
Coin description
The obverse of the coin features a detailed profile of Marko Marulić, facing right. This portrait exudes wisdom and dignity, evoking the appearance of Renaissance scholars. To the right of the portrait, the inscription “MARKO MARULIĆ” is written in capital letters. Indeed, this engraving in Croatian recalls the name of this great Croatian literary figure.
At the bottom of the portrait, the year “2024” is engraved, marking the 500th anniversary of his death in 1524. In addition, the letters “HR”, short for Hrvatska (Croatia), appear to the left of the face. This mention underlines the national origin of the coin. Around the golden central part, the silver ring bears the twelve stars of the European Union. These stars, arranged in a harmonious manner, symbolize the unity and membership of Croatia in the Union.
As a result, the contrast between the golden centre and the silver border highlights the portrait. This composition immediately draws the viewer’s eye to Marulić’s effigy. In addition, the clean design and engraved details reinforce the solemn appearance of this commemorative coin.
