Introduction
Latvia issued this 2 euro coin in 2025 to honor the historical region of Sēlija. It thus continues its series dedicated to the country’s cultural regions. In addition, it highlights its heritage and affirms its national identity through this numismatic issue.
Coin description
The obverse of the coin features a shield that depicts a slender deer, the emblem of the Sēlija region. This majestic animal symbolises the nature and nobility of this wooded territory. Furthermore, the shield occupies the centre of a golden background, creating a striking contrast with the rest of the coin.
The engravers inscribed “LATVIJA” above the shield to designate the issuing country. At the bottom, they added “SĒLIJA” to identify the region being honoured. In addition, they engraved the year of issue “2025” on the right side, thus ensuring optimum readability. In addition, the outer contour features the twelve stars of the European flag, recalling Latvia’s membership in the European Union.
