Introduction
In 2022, Portugal issued a two-euro commemorative coin that celebrates the 100th anniversary of the crossing of the South Atlantic by Portuguese aviators Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral. Additionally, this piece highlights this historical and technological feat in aviation.
Coin description
The obverse of the coin features a detailed illustration of the seaplane used for the crossing. This aircraft model, known as the “Lusitânia”, occupies the center of the composition. In addition, this representation highlights the technical prowess and daring of the Portuguese aviators.
Around the illustration of the seaplane, we can read the inscription in capital letters “TRAVESSIA DO ATLÂNTICO SUL”. In French, this translates to “CROSSING THE SOUTH ATLANTIC”. Below the plane, we find the name of the issuing country “PORTUGAL” followed by the dates “1922 – 2022”, marking the centenary of this aerial feat.
Furthermore, the names “CASA DA MOEDA” and “VÍTOR SANTOS” appear respectively on the left and right of the seaplane. These names designate the monetary institution responsible for producing the coin and the artist who designed it. In addition, the outer border of the coin is decorated with the twelve stars of the European Union. This symbolizes unity and harmony among member states.
