The history of the coin

The 2024 commemorative 2 euro coin issued by Germany honors the 1849 Constitution of Saint Paul’s Church (Paulskirche). Indeed, it pays homage to the ideals of democracy, justice and freedom. In addition, it celebrates a key moment in German history. This marks the first attempt to create a unified and democratic German state.

Furthermore, allegorical design highlights these fundamental values. It also highlights the historical importance of the Paulskirche in Frankfurt. Additionally, the coin commemorates the 175th anniversary of the Paulskirche from 1849.

The first democratic constitution was adopted in Germany by the National Assembly in Frankfurt. Indeed, the National Assembly met at Saint-Paul Church in Frankfurt. This played a crucial role in the movement towards democracy and German unity.

Description of the coin

The center of the piece presents an allegory of justice and democracy. At the top, a female figure symbolizes Freedom. She holds a scale in her left hand and a flag in her right hand.

To his right, another figure holds a sword, symbolizing Justice. Furthermore, to his left, a figure holds a document, representing the Constitution. Below these figures, architectural representations are visible. They include the Paulskirche in Frankfurt, an important symbol of German democracy.

Around the central design the inscription “PAULSKIRCHENVERFASSUNG 1849” is visible. It says “Constitution of the Church of Saint-Paul 1849” in German. Additionally, the letter “D” appears on the left side, indicates the country of issue “Deutschland”. The mark of the engraving workshop is located to the right of the piece, close to the number 4 (from the year 1849).

At the bottom of the design, the year “2024” is written, marking the year the coin was issued. Additionally, the outer border of the coin is decorated with twelve five-pointed stars. These stars represent the member states of the European Union, surrounding the central motif and inscriptions, forming a symbolic crown.
